The Course Introduction message is a powerful and engaging way to introduce students to the course subject matter. Instructors are able to summarize the core course topics, and most importantly, give insight on their connection to the student’s overall education and application to the real world. As the subject matter expert, how would you explain the course’s value proposition? Ultimately, Course Introduction messages help to get students invested early in the course by building interest and excitement for the course curriculum.
- Tell a story – Storytelling is a potent tool to get students invested. Whether the goal is to educate, persuade, or encourage action, telling stories is an effective way to improve student engagement in a course.
- Make it evergreen – Creating an evergreen message entails removing any instructor specific information. Instructor specific information should only be in the Meet the Instructor message. In addition, remove all references to specific lessons, modules, texts, resources, etc. as these may change in the future.
- Make it concise – The Course Introduction message should be succinct. This is especially true for Course Introduction messages delivered via video. A one page, double-spaced document provides enough details to effectively communicate your message and draw in your audience.
- Write a script – Many instructors believe writing a script will diminish the authenticity of the message and make it come across as stiff and rigid. The fact is that scripts can and should be conversational. A well-written script has the power to inform and captivate students. With that said, writing a script for a course introduciton presentation is not required, but we do recommend it.
