Using Quicktime to Screencast

Quicktime for Windows is no longer support by Apple. We recommend using Camtasia Studioto screencast on a Windows computer.

Pre-Recording Preparation

Before you start recording make sure that you follow the steps below.

  1. Change your screen resolution to 1280x720
  2. Silence all notifications and close any app that may produce notifications
  3. Make sure you are recording in a private quiet area that will be free from any extraneous noise
Step 1:

Connect your Microphone to your computer

Open up System Preferences

Select Sound, then Input, and then the microphone you connected

Step 4:

Speak into the microphone and adjust the Input Volume so the meter tops out at roughly the 2/3 mark

Open up Quicktime

Step 6:

Go to the top menu and choose File > New Screen Recording.

Step 7:

Click the red record button to start recording, but make sure to double-check that Quicktime is using the correct microphone and select Show Mouse Clicks in Recordings.

Step 8:

Before recording starts you’ll get a prompt that asks if you want to record your entire or just a section. You will want to record the entire screen.

Step 9:

Click the stop recording button in the top-right menu.

Step 10:

Go to the top menu and choose File > Save and save your recording. Make sure to give it a descriptive title as it will be easier to keep track of your recordings.
