The Storybook+ Player

The University of Wisconsin-Extended Campus developed an open-source media player for online courses entitled Storybook+. Storybook+ allows instructors to curate content and present materials in a meaningful, pedagogically sound manner. Storybook+ allows students to access various forms of online content in granular chunks, accessed from a table of contents in the player’s sidebar. The player is content agnostic, allowing instructors to create presentations using various assets, including, but not limited to, videos, animation, audio narration, graphics, interactive simulations, and quizzes.

The media player also has a built-in quiz engine that instructors can leverage to integrate formative self-assessments throughout their presentations. The quiz engine accommodates various question types, including multiple-choice, multiple-select, fill-in-the-blank, short answers, and drag-and-drop. We are currently working on LTI and SCORM implementation so quiz questions can be graded and recorded in various learning management systems.

Since the course content is posted asynchronously with no opportunity for face-to-face instruction, students may need to access this information through a screen reader or other navigational means. The Storybook+ Player provides keyboard navigation access and supports captioning for slides or images overlaid with audio. The Storybook+ Player has been thoroughly tested for screen reader accessibility and is now Level A compliant with WCAG 2.0 standards.

At the University of Wisconsin-Extended Campus, we believe in outreach efforts that positively impact student learning. In that spirit, we are excited to disclose that our Storybook Player is available at no cost. You can download source files on our GitHub account to utilize the player for your organization. In addition, we developed a technical guide to help you structure your presentations properly.
