Video Project Organization

This page covers project organization for all video based projects. This includes videos, animations, screencasts, and lightboard.

Project Folder Organization

Structure

Breakdown

  • project_folder
This folder level represents your entire project. The naming of the folder should follow our project naming conventions.
  • dev
This folder contains all of the materials used to create the project – essentially the building blocks of the media piece.

  • assets
These are all of the various files that you use in the building of your project. These might be videos, images, audio files, text documents, etc. Like assets should be organized together into relevant folders. This subfolder structure is developer preference, but must exist. Below is an example.

  • after_effects
If your project requires the use of After Effects then your .aep file should be saved into a After Effects folder and should be saved with the same name as the project folder. After Effects generates important support folders for auto-saving and cache files, and these need to be organized with your .aep file.

In addition, there should be a render folder. This is where all videos rendered out of your After Effects project should go.
  • premiere
If your project requires the use of Premiere Pro then your .prproj file should be saved into a Premiere Pro folder and should be saved with the same name as the project folder. Premiere Pro generates important support folders for auto-saving, cache files, and motion graphic template files. These need to be organized with your .prproj file.

In addition, there should be an output folder. This is where all videos exported out of your Premiere Pro project should go.
  • fin

  • project_name
This folder is what you’ll upload to the web server. It represents the final completed media piece. It should include the latest version of the generic player manifest files – gvp.xml and index.html, and also the pdf transcript.
  • transcript
This is where all your ADA files live. This includes the .txt and .srt files from 3Play Media, and the .docx transcript. The transcript must be named with the project name.

Premiere Pro Organization

Structure

Key Practices

  • Organize, then import – ALWAYS place and properly name your asset files before importing them into Premiere Pro. This process should be continually done throughout the editing process and NOT at the end of the project.
  • Sequence Naming – Sequences should follow our naming conventions and match the project name.
  • Template Files – Make sure your Premiere Pro project is saved in your project folder structure when starting your project. This will ensure that all the motion graphic and premiere pro composer template files are saved in the correct place.

After Effects Organization

Structure

Key Practices

  • Organize, then import – ALWAYS place and properly name your asset files before importing them into After Effects. This process should be continually done throughout the editing process and NOT at the end of the project.
  • Comps and Precomps – Make sure to organize and differentiate between your main comps and precomps. Precomps are smaller comps that make up your main comps. Main comps are what you render out of After Effects.

Best Practices and Tips

  • Always be Organizing!
    • Project organization is NOT something that is done at the very end of the project. It is a continuous ongoing process and should be built into your workflow. For example, you should not be saving your project files in various different places and then move them all together at the end of your project.

  • Design = Organization
    • Your project organization is just as important as your project design.
    • We are a large team and produce a lot of projects. Proper project organization enables us to easily hand off projects and support a large workload.

  • Precision > Speed
    • Project organization should never be sacfriced for speed. Project organization is an equally important part of the development process.

  • If in Doubt, Reach Out
    • If you’re ever unsure or can’t quite remember reach out to senior team members or check documentation.
